Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city with superb shopping plus an incredible nightlife. For the more bohemian tourist there are many places to visit especially in the West End which features boutiques, cafés, tea rooms, bars, restaurants and clubs as well as some superb Glasgow bed and breakfast. In the article below I will describe three Glasgow attractions which should be of special interest to those people who have an interest in art; the Burrell Collection, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and the House For An Art Lover:
The Burrell Collection
Sir William and Lady Burrel gifted The Burrel Collection to the city of Glasgow, in 1944 and the collection can be seen at Pollok Country Park which is found in the south of Glasgow This magnificent collection of works of art includes over 9 thousand items of art. The collection is incredibly diverse containing a selection of modern artistic sculptures plus a collection of Islamic art. Visitors are able to see paintings by artists such as Cezanne, Degas and other European artists. Besides sculptures and paintings you can enjoy the incredibly beautiful collections of alabasters, tapestries, English furniture and stained glass. On top of all this, the Burrell Collection also contains an immensely important collection of art from the medieval period and collections from ancient Chine & Egypt.
House For An Art Lover
The House For An Art Lover is one of the most popular attractions in Glasgow. This incredible Art Nouveau house was designed, originally, by Charles Rennie Mackintosh (with the help of his wife Margaret Macdonald), Glasgow’s most famous architect.
Actually the design was created for a competition of 1901 to create a design for a ‘House for an Art Lover’, but, the entry from the Mackintosh couple was disqualified from the competition on the grounds that it was submitted too late. Luckily, over 100 years later the house stands completed in Bellahouston Park thanks to the efforts and hard work of the engineer Graham Roxburgh and architect Professor Andy Macmillan. Building began in nineteen eighty nine, ceased for a short time but resumed again in nineteen ninety four due to the collaboration between the Glasgow City Council and Glasgow School of Art.
The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum
One of Glasgow and Scotland’s premier museums, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery is home to one of Europe’s great civic art collections, but also it is one of Scotland’s most popular free to enter visitor attractions.
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is sited on the banks of the River Kelvin, on Argyle Street, in the West End of Glasgow. The gallery was constructed in a Spanish Baroque style following the Glaswegian tradition of using red sandstone. The gallery was followed the designs of Sir John W. Simpson and E.J. Milner Allen and opened in nineteen hundred and one. The collections of the museum were originally from the old Kelvingrove House Museum and the McLellan Galleries.
